'To provide tennis facilities for the community and to promote the sport.'
Somerton Tennis Club has been in existence for over 70 years in many locations throughout Somerton. The club is based on a simple formula: To provide a well managed and kept tennis facility for its members and the people of Somerton. The club has progressed over the years and has evolved from humble beginnings to its present stature.
The club is affiliated to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) the governing body for tennis in this country. To that end we try to keep to the principle they set out: We welcome anyone into the club at any standard without the need to be “played in” or wear “regulation whites”; as we have done for many years. All we ask is that you respect the club rules, its members and general tennis etiquette.
The tennis you play in the club is entirely up to you. Whether you want to be considered for the club teams in the Yeovil and District league or just have a gentle knock with another member or two is entirely up to you.
The club runs two open club sessions on Wednesday evening from about 7:00 to 10:00 (although most members have retired to the bar by 9:30) and again on Sunday mornings from 10:30 to 13:00ish. During the winter season when there are no evening matches the Men have a session on Mondays from about 7:30 and the Ladies on Thursdays.
The courts are open to members to use as they wish at all other times, and can be reserved with the Booking Secretary.
The club has recently started offering "Hit Fit" session which are becoming increasingly popular. It provides a full body workout through a series of tennis based drills conducted to up-tempo music on a tennis court. Its fun and sociable and provides a great cardio workout whilst improving your tennis skills. Click here for more some pictures here.
